Their hair was standing straight up, I don’t think I’ve ever climbed down a mountain so fast! Trail hikers will be descending 700 feet into the headwaters of Engine Creek flanking Jura Knob on the west before climbing back up to meet the Deer Creek Trail in three miles where the routes rejoin. There is a parking area and restroom facility on the east side of the road at Coal Bank Pass (though this isn't where you'll want to park to access the peak). Travel: The thru-hike requires a shuttle. The trail system from Molas Pass to Coal Bank Pass, closed during the 416 Fire, reopened with celebratory fanfare.

Coal Creek is a popular downhill bike route to the highway, accessed from Deer Creek Trail or Engineer Mountain Trail. The Silverton Magazine provides a good online lodging guide. The trek begins on the Colorado Trail near Molas Pass and makes an arc westward and then south to the Pass Creek Trail, concluding at Coal Bank Pass. It was a climb with the switchbacks but really do able. Pass by impressive conglomerate boulders embedded in tundra that peeled off the cliffs above. Made the summit a couple days ago. A delightful block scramble terminates at Corner Wall, a seven-foot downclimb located on the east side of the prominence. This summit has nearly 1,500 of vertical prominence, with the visual prominence to match! Even with snow it was easy to follow. Easy access from Hwy 550 makes Engineer Mountain, just few feet shy of being a 13er, a great option for a half-day outing in the summer, and thanks to the fact that Hwy 550 is plowed in the winter, this peak provides a moderate-approach snow-season outing as well. Notably, Engineer Mountain features a massive rock glacier on its northern side, quite the site to behold. Shortly, reach the signed junction with the EMT and turn south. When in that first bit of the chimney after hiking up past the rock hut take a hard left- you’ll see a bit of a natural opening you’ll need to climb up. Snow isn’t present at the chimney, or past that point to the top.
After starting your journey out working through the forest, you'll come out to a meadow (roughly 2.56mi) below Engineer.

Laid during the Permian age 252 to 298 million years ago, the red color comes from iron-oxide compounds deposited with the sand and mud. The pitch is gentle to start and somewhat steeper near the top.
Didn’t do the loop so round trip was about 6.5 miles. To reach Coal Bank Pass hikers transition from the Colorado Trail to the Engineer Mountain Trail. Looking north is Rolling Mountain, the Ice Lake series and Twin Sisters. Just off the bench, the sizable local elk herd grazes unaware of hikers above. Coal Creek Trail is a 3-mile trail connecting Engineer Mountain Trail to Highway 550; Deer Creek Trail can also be accessed from Coal Creek. Most visitors to this peak will access the mountain from Coal Bank Pass. And the waterfall is flowing! The unmarked trail going up Engineer Mtn is steep and requires more skill (and courage) as you near the top. Turn right onto Camino Del Rio (HWY 550) and continue north on Hwy 550 past Purgatory Resort toward Silverton. The mountain is easily accessible thanks to the proximity of US Hwy 550, but carries the tradition of rotten San Juan ruggedness well. Hillsides are enveloped in osha, delphinium and corn husk lily. Commercial Campgrounds Silverton hosts at least three commercial campgrounds offering services such as RV hookup, snacks and showers. Walk south for just 0.2 mile on the EMT. One mile from the trailhead pass, a perfectly round disk of water.
