Overall I enjoyed the book and look forward to the next one, and to see how this develops with the group has been causing havoc all over the world. [I loved how they story had them come back together, and how it came about. I've just finished For Love Or Honor, and Lord Devereaux is said to be a widower. When her politically successful, wealthy husband, Carter, shows up at the estate to throw a holiday party, he and Miranda are shocked to see each other. So good. I should’ve DNF it but I kept to it just to see where it went. Do any of her newer novels mention Miranda or Carter? One where her mean mother-in-law forbids her to partake of. High octane action and pure fun. And the ending was sweet, just wished there was an epilogue 16 years later saying she was still alive. I find my sleep these days is interrupted so I try to read myself back to sleep with romance. She seems to be living a pretty normal life except for the voices in her head that keep telling her to hurt people, but she keeps them in check (for the most part) because she is terrified of becoming like her father. The main couple are married but have been separated for three years as the story begins, and the question is whether they can get past hard feelings and huge misunderstandings (major trope alert!) Fantastic new characters were introduced and some familiair faces show up as well. There were many twists and turns, and it was impossible to predict what might happen next. I can see why it's rated lower than her previous novels. Or so she thinks. I had such a difficult time suspending belief that two married people who have been separated for three years, who had apparently loved each other at one time, would reunite and not immediately address the gigantic elephant in the room. Layla gets pulled into this world when she is kidnapped by Elias Wells, the red cap, and in an escape attempt bleeds on a scroll which causes her to inherit the demon trapped in it and the three other persons who previously held the scroll.
I have been trying to stay away from "heavy" books lately because of enough real drama in the real world...I like to read to get away from the real world. Being set before, I was a bit reluctant to start this new series by Steve McHugh because I loved the Hellequin Chronicles and its main character Nate so much. A Glimmer of Hope is the first in his new series, The Avalon Chronicles which is set in the same world as the previous series but features new storylines and a new cast of characters. My heart ached for the main characters, yet I marveled at their strength. She is the modern queen of the Regency era--in writing at least. A lot of missed opportunities. It was a little slow for the first couple of chapters while I was trying to place everything in the timeline of events with Nate. I really enjoyed the book. Why did they separate in the first place?
