The theme will highlight literacy learning from a lifelong learning perspective and therefore mainly focus on youth and adults. How do we introduce them to a wide diversity of characters, genres, storylines, and writing styles? The recent Covid-19 crisis has been a stark reminder of the existing gap between policy discourse and reality: a gap that already existed in the pre-Covid-19 era and is negatively affecting the learning of youth and adults who have no or low literacy skills and therefore tend to face multiple disadvantages. Policy-makers, practitioners, and development partners have drawn on some important lessons, particularly in the context of both formal and non-formal education, such as the potential of distance learning offered by digital and other types of technologies, and yet, the primacy of face-to-face interactions between educators and learners which cannot be fully addressed in the distance learning options. Improving literacy facilitates employment whereby both males and females can contribute, helping the wider economy and community to thrive. The COVID-19 global crisis is having a significative impact on the education of thousands of children across the world.
