One section, in particular, is really bad: in Caykara, the narrow road has 13 sharp turns and climbs from 5,616 feet to 6,767 feet in a span of about 3 miles.
The unpaved road is made of gravel that stretches six miles to Fairy Meadows at the base of Nanga Parbat. Lucky for him. If I ever get in a jam I would DEFINATELY want Kevin and Mark coming to get me. That being said, it is dangerous to drive this in icy/winter conditions. I have been lucky to have found this sight years ago and have learned so much about Colorado, however, Firewife and swahl have a great point. The original portion of the Million Dollar Highway was a toll road built by Otto Mears in 1883 to connect US 550 was part of the original 1926 federal highway system. One incident, in 2013, left approximately 15,000 people stranded when the road was closed after a snowfall of 40 to 50 centimeters. Just take your time and switch drivers so everyone can enjoy the view. There is a one mile stretch of the mountain pass road to Ouray that is extremely technical, with large rocks that move under your wheels and a one thousand foot drop if something goes wrong.
