DISTRIBUTION: Southern Cape, Transkei, Lesotho, Free State, Kwa-zulu Nata, Swaziland, Central and Southern Transvaal. The Rinkhals is endemic to Southern Africa and found only in South Africa and eastern Zimbabwe. In terms of geographical distribution, the Rinkhals is found around the eastern regions of South Africa. It’s distribution is restricted to the wetter parts of South Africa, with a relic population in the Nyanga District Zimbabwe.

Unlike the true cobras, the Rinkhlas has keeled body scales, lacks solid teeth on the maxilla (upper jaw) and produces live young (anything from 20 – 30 babies, but up to as many as 63 per litter).
