It also resembles the robust Viking world of lovably grumpy clan chiefs and wimpy kids in another DreamWorks animation, How to Train Your Dragon. His vices include James Bond films, Mountain Dew and terrible B-grade movies. And the subject matter can play on a child’s deepest fears. And Merida must learn to recognize that like herself, Elinor is caught in the trappings of their society’s traditions, and that her mother loves her and only wants what’s best. Amazingly, Brave is not the stereotypical princess story that necessitates the presence of a male hero. (They’re shown from behind.) She teaches her lute-playing and schools her in the kingdom’s history and geography. And while the movie’s narrative makes it clear that Merida’s dealings with the witch are ill-advised, they also help, indirectly, get her out of her betrothal.
