On a total fighting thing, the Viper's more maneuverable and has better shields, and better hardpoints, but lacks visibility and has a lower power distributor, so you can fire your weapons a bit less. Boost 3 times, and you can dock.
Also, the outermost hardpoints are not good for fixed as only one weapon can hit a small target at a time. The cobra is an upgraded sidewinder, I.e. But really a viper is a combat ship, like an upgraded eagle. You also have more access to systems for internal compartments. Utility wise, cobra is more useful due to having a larger internal bay, better jump range. I can easily overshoot a target, flip my Viper end for end (without toggling flight assist), and get going in the other direction after them, on their tale no less, with ease. I like to use the cobra for pirating as freighters tend to drop good stuff and cobras have 36 cargo. Which with 8 tons on a Viper is pretty short. Trading just makes too much money now, but I reaaally want a viper. Viper is better for most combat situations, but you definitely at least "stand a chance". One is the bigger class for a power supply, meaning you have a bigger power grid to use, thus no micro managing your systems online and offline.
