watch lovesong frantic assembly

This evoked sympathy from the audience for Maggie, as the shoes were representative of her youth; being unable to walk in them seemed like being unable to relive her youth despite her best efforts and clear sense of nostalgia. Although subtle, this technique added depth to their characterisation, therefore making their characters even more believable for the audience. The story, which explores the endurance of relationships and decaying of the human body is brought to life, focuses on the entwining lives of William… A specific scene which was empowered by music was the scene where Maggie finds her old high heel shoes in the wardrobe. ( Log Out /  An aspect of the set left open to interpretation was the use of the autumn leaves scattered across the stage floor; I believed this was symbolic of decay and time passing. One of these moments was when William went to the fridge to drink for the first time during an argument with Margaret, and his older self shut the fridge door behind him. The performance was conducted in the visceral, physical theatre style which Frantic Assembly is so well accredited for. Whilst these furnishings were used beautifully for seamless entrances and exits of the actors (such as when Maggie walks into the wardrobe, and the younger Margaret steps out) the rest of the spacious stage was left empty; allowing room for scenes of elaborate physical theatre.

Lovesong intricately weaves the story of a couple in the first stages of their life together with the same couple as they approach the end of this story. The performance takes place in the kitchen and bedroom of Bill and Maggie’s house, which is stalked by the ghosts of their younger selves.

The production stayed with me for a long time after I had seen it, as for me it illustrated the fragility of life and relationships, and the naturalistic, raw emotional response to separation through death. This larger space made the cross-cutting techniques more effective and gave the audience a feeling of looking in on the scenes. This worked particularly well in the scene where Bill and Maggie are laid on the bed, and Margaret and William are sat, perched up against the end of the bed. Both men wore brown button down shirts, whilst in one of the scenes Maggie is seen wearing a scarf of the same blue colour as the dress Margaret was wearing in the previous scene. The performance was conducted in the visceral, physical theatre style which Frantic Assembly is so well accredited for. This created a sorrowful ambiance, as it proved hard to watch a couple who were once so passionate and full of adoration for each another now have nothing left to say to one another. Directed and choreographed by Scott Graham and Steven Hoggett, it features an extraordinary collaborative performance from its cast; Edward Bennett, Sam Cox, Sian Phillips and Leanne Rowe. Much of this was done with both couples on stage, by the use of crosscutting. Love Song is a piece of theatre that is about growing old and falling in love. A delicate mix of storytelling and physical theatre, this production was captured by Digital Theatre live at the Lyric Hammersmith, London. Another way in which Maggie and Margaret connected their characters was through the use of Brechtian-style gesture; both often pursed their lips to show displeasure. Throughout the performance I thought of Maggie and William as a unit, and so when Maggie died it felt as though William was left at a loose end and appeared vulnerable without Maggie; the sorrowful atmosphere could’ve easily accounted for the death of both characters. 350+ written teaching resources, by industry leaders - including lesson plans, concise introductions, play texts, curriculum-mapped revision guides and director notebooks. The story, which explores the endurance of relationships and decaying of the human body is brought to life, focuses on the entwining lives of William and Margaret (later becoming Bill and Maggie) as they progress through time together, and the audience witness their past and present selves collide in memories.
