Which pet is meaningless if you want to kite elites into town. It's nice to have but really only good if you're manually controlling your pet... which you should be. What you are talking about has all been done before. Finally, Shell Shield may be of particular value for an elite or boss that inflicts magic damage or has an enrage state that makes it immune to cc or is otherwise unkiteable.
note: The Teldrassil owls do not have screech learned, you will need to learn it from a carrion bird in Westfall or otherwise, but the owl will still need to be kept as its the only owl for a long time. Shell shield is a joke.

So right off the bat we can see that from stats alone an owl is in a pretty good spot, sure its damage is lower (roughly 3% lower) but with untouched health and armor hes going to take less damage, survive longer, and that means youre spending less time healing him with mend pet and therefore saving more mana and being able to take on tougher mobs. The entire point of FD is to drop combat. Hyena: Absolutely garbage tier stats and nothing interesting in terms of abilities, skip this for sure. Furthermore, they are extremely tanky so you spend little if any time having to heal them. You’ve confused me and my gorilla pet, which is the best vanilla pet.
