To the south-west of the mountain lies Geneva Lake and to the south-east is Snowmass Lake, a larger lake often used as the overnight stop on summit hikes. We spent less than 10 minutes on the summit, took some photos, and then began our descent using the same route that we ascended with.

To reach Snowmass Lake, you follow signs for the Maroon-Snowmass Trail. Hiking on Snowmass is better taken in the spring and early summer (April-June), when the snowfield still covers much of the route. It was eerie but exciting. This resort is far closer to Burnt Mountain (3,541 m/ 11,617 ft), though no doubt borrows the Snowmass name for its obvious appeal to vacationing skiers.
Once we got to the base of the cliffs, we got our first glimpse of blue skies; we could tell that we were about to climb over the ridge and out of the clouds. These lakes feature prominently on hiking routes, and are linked via the Trail Rider Pass to the south of the massif.

Conditions: Weather windy, clear, and cold in the morning; intermittent rain in the afternoon for the hike out from Snowmass Lake. Snowmass Mountain's summit is small, exciting, and very breezy. All hikers must register with the US Forest Service on entry, though no fees are charged (they use the data simply to track usage of the area). Please submit any useful information about climbing Snowmass Mountain that may be useful to other climbers. At the largest of the lakes, the trail moves to the west side of Snowmass Creek prior to beginning some significant elevation gain. We operate under permit in the White River National Forest and are an equal opportunity service provider and employer.
