Our Junior Beginners Course takes place once a year, starting in early September. Oxford University Lightweight Rowing Club has been training scholar athletes and fielding crews to compete against and beat Cambridge at the Lightweight Boat Races year on year since 1975. OXFORD UNIVERSITY LIGHTWEIGHT ROWING CLUB. Since the 2012 and 2016 Olympics we have seen a sustained rise in demand for our adult beginners courses. We offer great facilities and training courses suitable for all technical abilities.
Participants will need no previous knowledge of rowing, but should come prepared to take moderate exercise including some lifting. Since their founding in 1859, they have seen countless wins at Henley Royal Regatta, fielded hundreds of rowers for the Boat Races, and maintained their status as one of the pre-eminent rowing colleges in Oxford.
Training includes land-based exercises, boat handling and an introduction to rowing on the river. Due to some fairly unique circumstances, contact sport and anything that involves depth perception are pretty much off the table to me. 1m 40cm tall is the minimum safe height for a child sculling on our courses. From our MCBC base near the centre of town, the river makes its way out of Oxford towards Iffley Lock where it meanders on out into the beautiful Oxfordshire countryside.
