There is a downhill trail there but it diverges from the gps route and heads downhill, so we ended up bushwhacking our way to Coney Glade. We bailed out at the first clearing and took the utility line down. To the right is a lovely bridge. A bit further on, after you descend down through the open ski slope meadows and aspen groves, you'll come to The Root. A good flowing trail network will have most trails flowing in a single direction according to their intension. My gps said the entire loop was 8.5 miles and it took me about 3.5 hours. Nothing must stand in their way so stand aside. TH also the start of the Ditch Trail, head out Ditch Tr and about a half mile or so is the Connector Trail on your left. This trail can be accessed by various points on Snowmass ski area. If you don't have time for the out and back trip you can use the busses between Snowmass Village and Aspen for free.

Take the time to fully charge yourself for the Government as the technical rocky sections and multiple stream crossings demand your full attention and effort. Not much shade so wear sunscreen and hat. This trail has it all: a rolling cross-country section, small drops and a rapid downhill, cardio-intensive uphill parts, and technical rock gardens.

The trail is typically ridden from Snowmass to Buttermilk/Aspen, but it can be ridden in the other direction (more climbing, but still a fun ride), which is often known as Reverse Government. Think of this as a heatmap, more rides = more kinetic energy = warmer colors.

This trail provides an awesome singletrack experience from the eastern flanks of Snowmass Ski Area to the Tiehack side of Buttermilk Ski Area near Aspen. Aspen’s renowned 6.5-mile mountain biking trail, Government, also makes for an exceptional hike, especially in mid-September.
