Interesting story about Taro, a boy who is so lazy that his nickname is "The Boy of the Three-Year-Nap" and his mother who both have plans for how to improve their living arrangements and lifestyle.
And I am indeed only claiming that. Others saw that the story had value in that it showed the value of work and that people can change. The illustrations by Allen Say are beautiful and deserving of the Caldecott Honor he received. It would be a great book to share with students because it shows the Japanese culture, and it also is a story that teaches a lesson! It is a book I ordered from Troll years ago. It just goes to show that a good mother will always be a great benefit to her children.

This Caldecott Honor book was completely new to me and I really enjoyed it. However, I don't like that the daughter being offered up for marriage is never given a voice or choice i. But little does the boy know, that his mother has a better plan. Welcome back. I really like her, and the story in general. A traditional Japanese folktale that relates “wit against wile” to show that laziness does not pay - or does it? The illustrator excels at facial expressions which add to the humor of the story. The illustrations were the first thing I noticed in this book!
